You will swim in a counter clockwise rectangular pattern keeping the orange buoys on your left. One loop is all that is needed for the Sprint distance. Its a short 200-300 m run from the beach back to transition. You will enter the transition from the back under the Merrell Run "exit". All Sprint Athletes are racked on the left hand side while the Half Iron athletes will be on the right. The Sprint Bike course is the same as the long course, only shorter, and the run course is almost all completely contained in the park and on grassy surface, with only a short out and back on the road.
The Sprint Duathlon begins just outside the transition area close to the edge of the park. Look for the white barricade with the large Duathlon Start sign on it. It is a 2 km out and back course completely within the park on all grass surface. The RELAY option is an excellent way to get involved in the sport without having to do it all! Gather one or two friends or family members and create a team! Each athlete takes one or two of the disciplines and it is a whole lot of FUN! (see course description for triathlon). Each athlete is entitled to all the perks of the individual triathlete (race kit, food, water, Technical Tee etc.) Relay teams have their own area in transition and each bike rack is labeled specifically for that. It also should be noted that the TEAM shares ONE timing chip. The timing chip acts as the exchange baton like you would see at a relay running race. The swimmer begins the race with the chip on their ankle. The biker waits in Transition and once the swimmer returns from the swim, the chip will be exchanged. In order to help the Team keep organized and out of the path of all the other athletes in transition, we also have a relay penn area where the chip exchange will happen. The same will happen for the run portion and once the runner crosses the finish line you can all meet there to celebrate your victory! NOTE: Please have the whole team available at the same time for race kit pick up. All athletes must pick up their kits together and be present to sign their waivers.
The Half Iron Tri begins with a 2 lap, mass start swim. Please seed yourself accordingly on race day. We will help you figure this out when you pick up your registration kit.It is a 2 loop course swimming in a counter clockwise direction keeping all orange buoys on your left. After you finish your first loop you exit the water for a short 20 m run on the bach before returning back to the water for your second lap. Its a short 200-300 m run from the beach back to transition. You will enter the transition from the back under the Merrell Run "exit". All Half Iron Athletes are racked on the right hand side while the Sprint athletes will be on the left. Once on the bike the course has the potential to be fast. There are some small rolling hills mixed in with flat sections. It`s out and back, so it`s very fair. The run begins with an out and back section through the park, on grass and with some shade. It takes you past the finish line and then out onto the roads you just covered on the bike. By this point in the race the rollers might begin to feel like mountains, though. The road section is out and back. Keep in mind that once you cross the highway bridge on your return, it`s all downhill from there. The biggest challenge can often be the weather, given that July is usually quite hot and once you leave the park the run course is not shaded. NOTE: all Half Iron Athletes will receive a Merrell Technical Tee, a custom designed finishers medal and a Merrell Finishers Hat! ALSO NOTE: bottle exchange is located just past the town of Millbrook and you will have the opportunity to use this service at approximately 30 km and 60 km.
