COURSE MAPS

Try-A-Tri ~ 375m - 10K- 2.5K

This is your first chance to try a triathlon this season! You will see all types of athletes at this event. Many of them will be trying a triathlon for their very first time. You will see athletes that are very young and very fast and you will also see those have a very relaxed approach to the sport. Mountain bikes are perfectly acceptable to ride in this race. The swim begins by swimming in a clockwise "rectangular pattern". The swim path is clearly marked with large, orange buoys. The water tends to be quite chilly at this event so if you have a wetsuit you will want to wear it. If you don't you can always look into renting one or we often see people going without (depending on the temperature).Once out of the water it is a short trek into the transition area over asphalt surface that will be swept of stones. Please note that the Try-A-Tri has a separate Transition Zone from the Sprint racers. If you would like to have a family member or friend hand you some flip flops for the journey you are more than welcome to do so. Just make sure they don't interfere with the other athletes. The Try-A-Tri race is much less demanding than the Sprint Triathlon as the bike bypasses the Sixth Line Hill completely. It has some rollers but nothing too daunting. The run will leave transition uphill but avoid the bulk of the hills found on the Sprint course. A long gradual downhill to the finish ensures you look good for your finish line photos! Make sure you are smiling!

COURSE MAPS

Sprint Triathlon ~ 750m - 30K - 7K

This is an exciting race because it is the first one of the season! It's an excellent way to test your fitness. The swim tends to be a bit chillier this time of year but nothing a wetsuit won't fix! If you don't have a wetsuit you can always look to rent one. The swim takes place right inside Kelso Conservation Area in Kelso Lake and follows a "box-like' pattern in a clockwise direction. Large, orange Swim buoys will clearly mark your path and turns. Once out of the water it is a short trek into the transition area over asphalt surface that will be swept of stones. If you would like to have a family member or friend hand you some flip flops for the journey you are more than welcome to do so. Just make sure they don't interfere with the other athletes. The Sprint course can be quite challenging. The bike includes a climb of the Sixth Line Hill, which is approximately over a kilometer long. It stair-steps on the way up, so even after you think you’ve crested the hill, you’re not there yet. Beginners will often walk parts of this hill, but that could be due to being tired after the swim, too. It never hurts to have a 25 cog or larger on your rear wheel for this hill, but strong riders can get up it with a 23 cog. It is a good idea to pace yourself at the start of the bike because there are a couple small rollers (like the highway overpass) on the way to Sixth Line. The big climb starts early in the race so finding a rhythm can be tricky. Once the hill has been conquered the bike course does a loop at the top of the escarpment (which is mostly flat with some minor rollers) before descending back down the Sixth Line hill. This is a VERY fast descent and it finishes with a 90 degree left hand turn so for safety sake, please control your speed. Once on the run athletes start with a short but steep hill out of transition before hitting a flat trail section. The run course is entirely inside Kelso Conservation Area and is a mix of road and trail. The run starts out over the dam and heads back into the Kelso campgrounds. There is a challenging hill just across the dam in this more spectator friendly course. After two turn arounds in the campgrounds, athletes will run past the transition and onto the Kelso trails that lead to another turn around on the path before the gate onto Appleby Line.

Sprint Duathlon ~ 2K- 30K - 7K

Your race begins with the run which will begin at the TOP of the steep hill just outside of the Transition Area. The run is mostly on well groomed trails and has one nice little hill climb and small rollers for the 1 km stretch out ; then turn around and make your way back to the transition area. Duathletes ALWAYS have their own area in the transition and each bike rack is marked with a red sign and your wave start. Now it's time to bike! The Sprint course can be quite challenging. The bike includes a climb of the Sixth Line Hill, which is probably over a kilometer long. It stair-steps on the way up, so even after you think you’ve crested the hill, you’re not there yet. Beginners will often walk parts of this hill. It never hurts to have a 25 cog or larger on your rear wheel for this hill, but strong riders can get up it with a 23 cog. The swim tends to be a bit chillier this time of year but nothing a wetsuit can't fix! If you don't have a wetsuit you can always look to rent one. The swim takes place right inside Kelso Conservation Area in Kelso Lake and follows a triangular pattern in a clockwise direction. Large, orange Swim buoys will clearly mark your path and turns. Once out of the water it is a short trek into the transition area over asphalt surface that will be swept of stones. If you would like to have a family member or friend hand you some flip flops for the journey you are more than welcome to do so. Just make sure they don't interfere with the other athletes. Swim/Bike athletes will have their own area in transition. You will notice signage on the end of the racks to help point you in the right direction. The Sprint course can be quite challenging. The bike includes a climb of the Sixth Line Hill, which is probably over a kilometer long. It stair-steps on the way up, so even after you think you’ve crested the hill, you’re not there yet. Beginners will often walk parts of this hill, but that could be due to being tired after the swim, too. Just remove your timing chip and return it back at the finish line to receive your water etc.

COURSE MAPS

Sprint Triathlon Relay ~ 750m - 30K - 7K

The RELAY option is an excellent way to get involved in the sport without having to do it all! Gather one or two friends or family members and create a team! Each athlete takes one or two of the disciplines and it is a whole lot of FUN! (see course description for the sprint triathlon). Each athlete is entitled to all the perks of the individual triathlete (race kit, food, water, Technical Tee etc.) Relay teams have their own area in transition and each bike rack is labeled specifically for that. It also should be noted that the TEAM shares ONE timing chip. The timing chip acts as the exchange baton like you would see at a relay running race. The swimmer begins the race with the chip on their ankle. The biker waits in Transition and once the swimmer returns from the swim, the chip will be exchanged. In order to help the Team keep organized and out of the path of all the other athletes in transition, we also have a relay penn area where the chip exchange will happen. The same will happen for the run portion and once the runner crosses the finish line you can all meet there to celebrate your victory! NOTE: Please have the whole team available at the same time for race kit pick up. All athletes must pick up their kits together and be present to sign their waivers.

  • Race Kit Pick Up - 2:00 pm - 4:00pm inside Kelso Conservation Area.
  • Note: if you come to the park just to pick up your kit On Saturday, please tell the folks at the front gate and they will ask you to pay the park entrance fee. If you return within a short amount of time they will give you your money back. If you plan to stay and take advantage of the park facilities then they will keep the park fee.
On Race Morning - Athlete entry has already been paid by World Endurance Canada. Family and friends will pay as follows: $5 per adult and $4 for seniors and children. The fees paid go to the Kelso Conservation Area. Athletes please enter the Main Gate at Kelso and you will be directed where to park.

Please note: Try-A-Tri athletes and spectators will NOT be able to leave the park between 9:45am and 10:30am while the Sprint bikes are heading out.

  • All participants and spectators must be in the park by 8:30 am. If you are not in the park by 8:30am you will get held up at the gate. Follow parking signs and enter the front gate. Athletes park entrance fee is covered but spectators must pay own entrance fee.

  • Triathlon - 9:45 am

Please NOTE: For those athletes who have not yet registered but still want to race; we will be offering race day sign ups on site during the above registration times. A $5 late registration Fee will be applied. We accept Visa, Mastercard and Cash.

From 401 Exit Highway 25 (Martin Street) South to Steeles. West to Tremaine North, to Kelso Conservation Area. From QEW Exit Highway 25 North to Derry Road West to Tremaine North to Kelso.
