The terrain in Huntsville seems to be either uphill or downhill, there are no flat sections, so that`s what you should expect on this course. Your race begins just after the triathletes start their swim. All duathletes will gather and begin their race under the MERRELL run exit tower in the transition area. Be sure to show up early for any last minute tips and or explanations. The first part of your race is a 2 kilometer loop which takes you over some rolling hills before returning back to the transition area. There is some climbing on the bike but nothing as hard as the escarpments of Milton or Niagara. You won`t be able to maintain momentum up a hill like you would with a small roller, but you can always see the top of it. It is a challenging but very doable bike course. The run will also be hilly but nothing too steep or too long. It is a great spectating course because it is contained around transition so family and friends can watch the bike and run action very easily.
The terrain in Huntsville seems to be either uphill or downhill, there are no flat sections, so that`s what you should expect on this course. The only flat part is on the SWIM! With the Swim/Bike you at least get to eliminate the running portion of the event. This is a great option for those athletes who are injured but still want to race! Your race will begin at the same time at those athletes competing in the triathlon. The difference here is that all the swim/bike athletes will be leaving all in one wave and will not be divided into their age group for the start of the race. There is a significant walk over gravel out to the swim start, so leave yourself plenty of time and wear shoes if you need them. They will be bagged and return to transition if you don`t have anyone to bring them for you. There is some climbing on the bike but nothing as hard as the escarpments of Milton or Niagara. You won`t be able to maintain momentum up a hill like you would with a small roller, but you can always see the top of it. It is a challenging but very doable bike course. Unlike the triathletes your race ends when you return from your bike portion of the event. You just have to rack your bike, take off your timing chip and bring it over to the ladies at the finish line where we will get you some cold, fresh water! It is a great spectating course because it is contained around transition so family and friends can watch the swim, bike action very easily.
The RELAY option is an excellent way to get involved in the sport without having to do it all! Gather one or two friends or family members and create a team! Each athlete takes one or two of the disciplines and it is a whole lot of FUN! (see course description for triathlon). Each athlete is entitled to all the perks of the individual triathlete (race kit, food, water, Technical Tee etc.) Relay teams have their own area in transition and each bike rack is labeled specifically for that. It also should be noted that the TEAM shares ONE timing chip. The timing chip acts as the exchange baton like you would see at a relay running race. The swimmer begins the race with the chip on their ankle. The biker waits in Transition and once the swimmer returns from the swim, the chip will be exchanged. In order to help the Team keep organized and out of the path of all the other athletes in transition, we also have a relay penn area where the chip exchange will happen. The same will happen for the run portion and once the runner crosses the finish line you can all meet there to celebrate your victory and receive your finisher hats and medals!
