Peterborough FAQ’S What's the first thing I should do when I get to the race site? Please park in designated areas only. Remember that parking along the side of a road may interfere with the race. Take your bike, gear etc to the transition area (fenced in area) and find a spot on the bike rack. Now proceed to the registration area (ask a volunteer for directions) – usually not far from transition. Registration has a few different steps… - Step 1 - look your race # up on the alphabetical list
Step 2 - sign a waiver (you will hand this in when you pick up your race #) Step 3 - pick up your race # and pins and hand in your waiver Step 4 - pick up your swim cap (triathletes) - duathletes can skip this step. Step 5 - pick up your race t-shirt . Step 6 - go back up to the transition area where Sportstats will be set up. This is where you will pick up your timing chip. Show them your Race # and they will get you your chip. Wear it on your ankle. Step 7 - next you will be getting bodymarked. They will put your age on your Left calf and left arm.
You are now ready to race! Listen to the announcer for last minute or specific instructions. Remember the earlier you get this done the more time you have to warm up and relax before your event.
Where do athletes get their timing chips and bodymarking? At the ChampionChip tent located near the transition area. Make sure you have your chip because if you don’t have it on you will not be timed for the event. The chips are not available on Saturday during early race kit pick up- so if you come to pick up your kit on Sat. you will still get your chip on the Sunday before the event. PLEASE note that Sunday is the only day you can get your chip. If you are in the SPRINT races please wait to pick up your chip until AFTER the HALF Ironman athletes have had the opportunity to get theirs.
Where do I put my race number while competing? Please have your race number pinned to your front when you cross the finish line. This helps us tremendously with timing. If you have access to a “race belt” this is very beneficial as you can put the belt on after the swim segment – spin your # around to your back for the bike and then spin it around again for the run. Race belts can be purchased at the Northwest Mutual Fund Tent on race day. They are $13 (tx included) and are a great triathlon invention! My friend is going to pick up my race kit on the Saturday- I will not be there. Can they do this? Yes - as long as you print off a waiver from the Peterborough Page of our website – sign it – and give it to your friend before they go. They must have your waiver in order to have your kit released to them. I just finished the Sprint and I want to leave the park when can I go and how do I get out without interrupting the ½ IM competitors? Anytime - as long as you follow these directions…. North on Ashburnham to Meniece Ave. Go East to Television Rd. then South to the Highway. Is it true, one mass start for the ½ Ironman Tri? No elite age group wave, no elite wave… In order to better place yourselves in the mass swim start we are asking you to predict your swim finish time and then select the colour swim cap that is dedicated to that time. For example: if you think you will finish the swim in 30 min. then you are “yellow”. This will help keep the faster swimmers together and the slower swimmers together thus creating “less congestion”. See the chart at the swim cap table for your cap colour. Remember - that this is a 2 loop swim. You will exit the water and run for a short distance before re-entering the water for your second loop. What about the Sprint Triathlon? Do we have to start all at once? No - you will be divided up into waves. Usually there are 5 of them. All starting 3 minutes apart from each other. We will post the start of the waves on the website as the weekend approaches. What is a “wave”? Since there are a large amount of people all doing the same race we can’t have you all starting at the same time . We divide up the waves the Wed before the event . Typically there will be roughly 100 people or less per wave all starting at 3 minute intervals. We will post the wave starts by Thursday morning on the homepage of our website so you can see when you will be starting ahead of time. How does the bottle exchange work for the long course? You will hit the bottle exchange twice on the bike course. If you wish to exchange your bottle for a new one, throw down your bottle in either the water or Gatorade section and a volunteer will hand you a full bottle. It is HIGHLY recommended to carry extra fluids on the bike even though we offer this service. Consider your requirements and bring it. It is not uncommon to hear of athletes losing their bottles as they ride and then not having a replacement. It is a very long ride without proper hydration. It is preferable that you use a bottle that you do not mind losing. Most bottles make it back to the transition area but from time to time one gets lost. We would hate to see this happening. Where are the aid stations on the run course? There are 11 aid stations on the run course. Approx. 1k, 3k,5k,7k,9k,12k,14k,16k,18k,and 20k. Each station will have water, Gatorade, and Pepsi. Power Gels will be at 3km, 9km and 12km and 18km. Make sure you plan accordingly. There are also water jugs in the transition area. Trisport is limited to 700 PowerGels on the run course. If you plan on using them also plan to carry extra. Where does the Duathlon start? The du starts across from the footbridge near the transition area. Are there special instructions to Relay competitors? There is not too much that is different. When you are all assembled before the race begins- go pick up your timing chip. There is only one chip per team. The chip gets exchanged between segments of the race only if the participant changes. The exchange is made at the bike rack inside the transition area. The relay bike rack is separate from the age group racks. Please try and stay out of the way of other participants as much as possible when making the switch. This is my first time in a triathlon and I am nervous about the swim. Will I be disqualified if I have to take a break by hanging on to the kayak or boat? Safety is our biggest concern overall. If you need to take a break please raise your hand in the air and get the attention of one of the lifeguards. You may hold on until you feel ready to continue swimming again. You will not be disqualified. I am uncomfortable about the swim portion and all those people around me. What can I do? If you would like go to the Inquiries Table and speak to Janet. She can switch you into the last wave where you have more room to spread out and take your time. Have you ever tried a wetsuit? Wetsuits not only keep you warm but they also help keep you buoyant. If you would like more information on wetsuit advantages or would like to rent one you can contact one of these reputable dealers… Ironman Wetsuits is the official wetsuit sponsor of the Subaru Triathlon Series and Subaru Muskoka Ironman 70.3.
