Milton FAQ’S

Is there a fee to get in the park on race day?
Athlete entry has already been paid by Trisport. Family and friends will pay
as follows:
$5 per adult spectator and $4 per child spectator. The fees paid go to the Kelso Conservation Area, not to Trisport.
Athletes please enter the Main Gate at Kelso and you will be directed where to park.

What's the first thing I should do when I get to the race site?

  1. Please park in designated areas only. Remember that parking along the side of a road WILL interfere with the race.

  2. Take your bike, gear etc to the transition area (fenced in area) and find a spot on the bike rack.

  3. Now proceed to the registration area (ask a volunteer for directions) – usually not far from transition.

  4. Registration has a few different steps…

    • Step 1 - look your race # up on the alphabetical list

    • Step 2 - sign a waiver (you will hand this in when you pick up your race #)

    • Step 3 - pick up your race # and pins and hand in your waiver

    • Step 4 - pick up your swim cap (triathletes) - duathletes can skip this step.

    • Step 5 - pick up your race t-shirt .

    • Step 6 - go back up to the transition area where Sportstats will be set up. This is where you will pick up your timing chip. Show them your Race # and they will get you your chip. Wear it on your ankle.

    • Step 7 - next you will be getting bodymarked.  They will put your age on your Left calf and left arm.

  5. You are now ready to race! Listen to the announcer for last minute or specific instructions. Remember the earlier you get this done the more time you have to warm up and relax before your event.

Since my race starts at 9:45 I am going to sleep in and get to the event later. Why bother coming so early in the morning?
Don’t sleep in! All participants whether they are doing the Try a Tri or the Sprint need to be inside the park by 8:30. If you aren’t then you will be stopped at the gate and stopped on the road until the Try a Tri is finished. This is not to  be mean but we need to secure the safety of the try a tri athletes participating on the road that leads into the parking lot. This will in turn, make you late for your race. So come early and help us cheer those Try
-A-Tri athletes on!

I am doing the Try-a-Tri and have to leave the park after my race. I know the Sprint race happens just after us. How can I get out of the park?
You would need to be done and out of the park by 9:45. If that’s not going to happen then we ask that you stay inside the park until at least 11:00. This is to ensure the safety of those participating in the Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon. The athletes use this road during the course of the event to leave and come back into the park during the bike portion. Please be considerate of your fellow athletes.

There are 2 separate transition areas (where you rack your bike) at this site. How do I know which one to set my stuff up in?
If you are in the Sprint Race (longer event) then your bike and gear will go in the biggest transition area. Once inside have a look at the end of the bike racks. There will be a sign with an age group posted on it. Please rack your bike on the appropriate age related rack.

If you are in the Try a Tri- your transition area is the smaller one, a little farther away from the water. Place your bike in the rack designated with the “wave” you are leaving in. For example: look at your race # when you get it. It will tell you if you are in wave 1,2 or3. The bike racks will also have corresponding #’s on them. This is where you will place all your stuff.  For more information please check out our beginner’s info page on our website www.trisportcanada.com

Do Try-a-Tri athletes need a timing chip?
Yes they do!

Where and when can I pick up my race kit?
Race kit pick up is 2-4pm on Saturday and 7-8:30am on Sunday.

Where do athletes get their timing chips and bodymarking?
At the SportStats tent located near the transition area

Where do I put my race number while competing?
Please have your race number pinned to your front when you cross the finish line. This helps us tremendously with timing. If you have access to a “race belt” this is very beneficial as you can put the belt on after the swim segment – spin your # around to your back for the bike and then spin it around again for the run. Race belts can be purchased at any sporting good store or also on race day at the Northwest Mutual Fund Tent inside the park.

Where does the Duathlon start?
It starts at the top (yes, the top!!!) of the big hill outside the transition area. First run is out and back and you will re-enter the transition area through the adidas run tower.

You'll be well prepared and gain a big edge.   The CompuTrainer course library contains hundreds of the popular triathlon courses.  Plus, you can create your own courses

Are there special instructions to Relay competitors?
There is not too much that is different. When you are all assembled before the race begins- go pick up your timing chip. There is only one chip per team. The chip gets exchanged between segments of the race only if the participant changes. The exchange is made at the bike rack inside the transition area. The relay bike rack is separate from the age group racks. Please try and stay out of the way of other participants as much as possible when making the switch.

This is my first time in a triathlon and I am nervous about the swim. Will I be disqualified if I have to take a break by hanging on to the kayak or boat?
Safety is our biggest concern overall. If you need to take a break please raise your hand in the air and get the attention of one of the lifeguards. You may hold on until you feel ready to continue swimming again. You will not be disqualified.

I heard that it’s a good idea to wear a wetsuit in the Milton races. Is that true?
We recommend it. Since it’s early in the season the water temperature is in the low 60’s.
If you would like to buy or rent one you can do so by contacting these retailers. They may even be able to bring it to you on the day of the event.

Ironman Wetsuits is the official wetsuit sponsor of the Subaru Triathlon Series and Subaru Muskoka Ironman 70.3.

I am uncomfortable about the swim portion and all those people around me. What can I do?
If you would like go to the Inquiries Table and speak to Janet. She can switch you into the last wave where you have more room to spread out and take your time.

Have you ever tried a wetsuit? Wetsuits not only keep you warm but they also help keep you buoyant. If you would like more information on wetsuit advantages or would like to rent one you can contact one of the reputable dealers above.

What is a “wave”?
Since there are a large amount of people all doing the same race we can’t have you all starting at the same time . We divide up the waves the Wed before the event . Typically there will be roughly 100 people or less per wave all starting at 3 minute intervals. We will post the wave starts by Thursday morning on the homepage of our website so you can see when you will be starting ahead of time.

Good Luck to Everyone!!!
